AI Travel Advice Tailors the Pitch, Not the Destination
A new report tested ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude across traveler personas and found the models adjust tone and activity details but largely recommend the same popular destinations.
Researchers ran repeated prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude using traveler personas that varied by demographics, interests, travel companions and budgets. The report is titled The Mystery of the Disappearing Destination: How AI Is Transforming Travel Discovery.
The models did adapt how they described trips. Travelers with children received family-friendly activity suggestions, while budget-conscious users were pitched low-cost flights.
The destinations themselves moved far less. Across the different personas, the recommended places remained largely the same, according to the findings on global travel discovery.
The concentration mirrored global international arrivals, which tend to cluster around a few well-known and popular destinations. In effect, AI personalizes the message but not the recommendation.
