AI Game Brings China’s Most Famous Painting to Life
A University of Hong Kong professor has developed an AI-powered simulation that lets users explore the world of 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival', a renowned 5-meter-long scroll painting from the Song Dynasty.
The painting, created by Zhang Zeduan during the Song Dynasty (960–1279), depicts the bustling life of Bianjing, the capital, along a river. It captures everything from humble farmhouses to lively markets, offering a detailed snapshot of the Qingming Festival, when people honored ancestors.
The simulation, built by a professor at the University of Hong Kong, uses artificial intelligence to allow players to step inside the artwork and interact with its environment. Players can stroll through the ancient streets, observing daily activities and the vibrant culture of the era.
The original scroll, which stretches more than 5 meters (16 feet), has a storied history: it was lost, stolen, and privately owned before being permanently housed at the Palace Museum in Beijing in 1976. The AI game makes this cultural treasure accessible to a global audience in an immersive way.
