A $9 NFC Key Physically Locks Distracting Apps

The Autonomous Key works with Android 8.0 and later and iPhones running iOS 15 or later. The compact key, about three inches long, pairs with a companion app to lock away selected apps. Instead of tapping a button to bypass a block, users must scan the key with their phone to regain access.

Each unlock session can last up to 60 minutes before the apps lock again automatically. The physical requirement is meant to turn a mindless impulse to open Instagram or TikTok into a deliberate effort. Users could leave the key in another room, at the office, or at the gym to add friction.

At $9, the Autonomous Key undercuts competitors such as Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59). Brick offers extra features including Sleep Mode and blocking in-app purchases, but the Autonomous Key covers core functionality at a lower price.

Screen-time apps typically depend on willpower, sending reminders or setting timers that users can quickly dismiss. The Autonomous Key takes a different approach by adding a physical step to the process.
