Zhang Yimou Confirms Homegrown Chinese 'Three-Body Problem' Film

Zhang Yimou has confirmed that his Chinese film adaptation of Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem is well underway, with the script polished over several years and more than 400,000 fan comments gathered to shape the project.

The director shared the update while serving as president of the main competition jury at the 31st Busan International Film Festival, speaking from the Busan Cinema Center stage.

He said he and his team have spent years refining the screenplay, and that a dedicated group was tasked with combing the internet for feedback from devotees of the novels. That effort amassed more than 400,000 comments, which the filmmakers are using to understand what audiences expect from the adaptation.

Zhang described the source material as a great work of science fiction that is nonetheless "hard to photograph," adding that he intends to study the hopes and demands of viewers closely in the hope of delivering a strong film.

Zhang is known for visually driven features including Hero and House of Flying Daggers. His version of the saga is a domestic Chinese production, arriving after the story reached international screens through a Netflix series adaptation.

The project is based on Liu Cixin's science fiction novels, a sprawling saga that has become one of China's best-known literary exports.
