The Plaza Hotel in New York to Shut for at Least Four Years for Facade Restoration
The Plaza Hotel in New York will close for at least four years to repair and restore its historic facade, with planning and stakeholder coordination still under way.
The landmark property, which first opened in 1907, is set for a multi-year shutdown while work is carried out on its exterior. Details of how the restoration will be executed remain under review, and the project is still in the planning stages.
The hotel said the work will require coordination with relevant stakeholders and compliance with historic preservation requirements.
Ownership of the property sits with Qatar's Katara Hospitality, which acquired full 100% ownership in July 2018 for approximately $600 million. Fairmont operates the hotel.
Questions remain over the residents of The Plaza's condominium units, with Fairmont not yet clarifying whether they will need to leave during the restoration.
Beyond its architectural character and craftsmanship, The Plaza has been one of the most frequently filmed and referenced buildings in popular culture, including its appearance in the 1992 film "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," in which Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McAllister checks in using his father's credit card.
