State Department Proposes Expanding Online Passport Renewals to Americans Overseas

The U.S. State Department is set to publish a proposal in the Federal Register on Friday that would permit Americans living or traveling overseas to renew their passports online for the first time. The rule is designed to streamline the renewal process and reduce the burden on consular services.

Under the current system, Americans overseas must visit a U.S. embassy or consulate twice to complete a passport renewal. The proposed change would remove that requirement, allowing the entire process to be handled digitally.

In addition to extending online renewals to Americans abroad, the proposal would gradually unwind restrictions that currently limit online renewal eligibility for domestic applicants. This broader change aims to modernize the State Department's passport services and make renewals more accessible.
