Shannon Duty Free Puts Irish Whiskey at the Forefront of Destination Retail

The duty-free complex at Shannon Airport, the international gateway for Ireland’s mid-west region, gives substantial space to Irish brands. The assortment spans shawls and Aran sweaters to chocolates, with whiskey positioned toward the back of the store but close to the till points.

Irish whiskey is presented as a destination category, with a broad selection drawn from producers across the island. Recent visits have revealed new additions to the range, underlining the category’s appeal even as distillers contend with headwinds including US tariffs.

Shannon handled 2.3 million passengers in 2025 and now leans more toward leisure travel to European destinations than the transatlantic powerhouse role it once held. US links remain important, with regular services to New York, Boston and Chicago supporting demand for Irish products.

The airport also holds a place in travel-retail history as the birthplace of modern duty free in 1947. The store is smaller than its former footprint but remains large relative to the traveller audience.

Beauty and fashion accessories occupy generous areas at the front, followed by food and drink further back, a layout that carries shoppers through Irish and global brands.
