Petra Power Pitches Solid Oxide Fuel Cells for Data Centers and Defense Vehicles

Petra Power, founded in 2017, sells solid oxide fuel cells that convert fuels such as natural gas into electricity without combustion, targeting data centers and large vehicles as AI power demand climbs.

The startup's ceramic fuel cells are designed to draw electric power directly from fuels including natural gas rather than igniting them, a route the company says is more efficient and more environmentally friendly than conventional generation for data centers and large vehicles.

Founder Aaron Goodman said the product delivers significantly lower fuel costs and emissions than traditional power sources, and that its compact, lightweight design gives it a much smaller physical footprint. He described combustion-based generation as a long chain of steps — burning fuel to produce heat, heat to produce motion, and motion to drive an electromotive force that eventually yields electricity — with losses at each stage.

Petra's cells instead strip electrons directly from the fuel to create electricity, skipping most of those steps, according to Goodman. The efficiency gain and the resulting cost savings are the core of the company's sales pitch.

The offering arrives as AI workloads consume ever larger amounts of electricity, spurring a search across the technology industry for power sources that are both efficient and cost-effective. Petra is among the companies positioning itself around that demand.

The company markets its fuel cells for data center operations and for large vehicles, including defense applications, according to the source material.
