O’Hare Terminal 3 Debuts Flag Feast, a 36-Flag Showcase of Chicago Art

A 36-flag installation by Chicago artists is now on display at O’Hare’s Terminal 3, offering international travelers a colorful look at the city’s culture and creative community.

Passing through O’Hare International Airport’s Terminal 3 now includes an art detour with the arrival of Flag Feast, a site-specific installation of 36 flags created by local artists. Unveiled on August 14, the display is part of the Chicago Department of Aviation’s effort to celebrate the city’s character and creative scene within the airport environment.

Each flag presents an individual artist’s interpretation of place, identity, and possibility, drawing on Chicago’s history and cultural fabric. The project was organized by the Design Museum of Chicago, which sourced contributions from a range of local creatives.

Before reaching O’Hare, Flag Feast was first shown at Navy Pier’s Field Day event and later appeared at Taste of Chicago. Its new home in Terminal 3 puts the artwork in front of a global audience during the busy summer travel season.

The installation will remain on view through late September, giving travelers a vivid introduction—or farewell—to Chicago’s artistic energy. For airport visitors, the flags serve as a cultural gateway, reinforcing the role that airports can play in reflecting a city’s identity and community spirit.
