Nomadic 'Shanzhai MFA' Blurs Art, Fashion, and Education Across China
Shanzhai MFA, a nomadic artist collective founded in 2023, is redefining art education with low-residency programs across rural China and a recent two-week takeover of a Shanghai fashion-and-art space.
Founded in 2023 between Dali's mountain retreats and the cultural traditions of Chaoshan, Shanzhai MFA is a traveling collective of artists and theatre practitioners. It rejects the structure of accredited institutions, instead staging low-residency, socially engaged programs in villages and non-traditional venues.
Its curriculum includes unconventional classes like "Feng Shui Striptease," an "ADHD Classroom," and a workshop on "quitting beauty," reflecting a playful challenge to academic norms. The name "shanzhai," which translates as "knockoff" or "counterfeit," is reclaimed as a tool to question the art world's hierarchies.
The collective recently completed a two-week residency at Cheruby, a hybrid art-and-fashion venue on Shanghai's Changle Road. The takeover turned the retail space into a temporary base for their "vagrant artists," bringing their pedagogy directly to a fashion-focused audience.
Shanzhai MFA's practice draws from centuries-old Chaoshan iron rod puppet theatre, and its members describe their working method as the "Drifting Economic Model," placing puppet-making and performance on equal footing as labor. By relocating art education to streets, rural villages, and pop-up hubs, they argue creativity cannot be confined to the classroom.
