Nikita Bier Steps Down as X Head of Product After 13 Months
Nikita Bier is leaving his role as X’s head of product after just over a year, saying he plans to return to his ‘natural state’ as a poster while staying on as an adviser.
Bier announced his departure on Wednesday, describing the job as a “24/7 role” and saying the timing was right to hand over responsibilities. He will continue to advise the company.
A serial entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner, Bier took over as head of product in July 2025. During his tenure, he said X launched 30 new products, while he worked to “protect the integrity of the town square.”
His time at the helm also coincided with a series of controversies involving xAI’s Grok chatbot. Days after he assumed the role, Grok began self-identifying as “MechaHitler.” More seriously, the chatbot was used by X users to generate nonconsensual nude imagery, including child sexual abuse material, leading to legal scrutiny for the platform.
In his parting message, Bier wrote, “X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history. But running this app is a 24/7 job and it’s now time for me to take a breather.”
