Mystery Deepens Around AI Model Ox Alpha's Origins
A free AI model called Ox Alpha appeared on OpenRouter, triggering intense speculation about its anonymous creator. The stealth model has drawn theories ranging from China's Z.ai to Microsoft, with Stripe CEO Patrick Collison among those praising it.
The free model surfaced on OpenRouter on Thursday, where it was described as "a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload." OpenRouter's listing labeled it a "stealth model" and said it was "developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview."
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is in the process of acquiring OpenRouter, added to the buzz by posting on X that Ox Alpha was "very impressive."
Online speculation quickly focused on possible Chinese origins. AI analyst Andrew Curran said Friday that initial theories centered on GLM, the model line from Chinese company Z.ai, but that by morning "people seem less sure of anything."
Other theories have emerged. A Wccftech article first suggested the evidence pointed to GLM, but later updated to propose that Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI. On Reddit, users are split, with one post declaring the model "can't be the Chinese" and another expressing "high confidence" that it is, in fact, Chinese.
No official confirmation has been released about who actually built Ox Alpha.
