Jeff Bezos Reportedly Eyes First Sports Team Stake With Liverpool FC
Jeff Bezos is reportedly close to acquiring at least a 30% stake in Liverpool Football Club at a £1.35 billion valuation, marking his first sports investment. The deal would place the billionaire among a growing group of American investors in U.K. soccer teams.
Jeff Bezos is reportedly in advanced talks to join a consortium acquiring at least a 30% stake in Liverpool Football Club, at a valuation of £1.35 billion (about $1.8 billion). The group is said to include Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
If completed, the deal would be Bezos's first sports team investment. The Amazon founder previously explored buying a U.S. football team stake but did not proceed. Liverpool is estimated to be worth about $6 billion.
Bezos would join a growing list of American billionaires in U.K. soccer. Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers, bought Chelsea; Woody Johnson, co-owner of the New York Jets, acquired Crystal Palace; Dan Friedkin took a stake in Everton; and Bill Foley's group, including Michael B. Jordan, purchased Bournemouth.
Liverpool's global brand is often likened to that of the Dallas Cowboys in the U.S., underscoring why the club attracts high-profile investors. The reported interest also reflects a broader fascination with English soccer among wealthy Americans, a dynamic amplified by shows like "Ted Lasso" and "Welcome to Wrexham."
