Hong Kong retailers tipped for Mainland spending lift as Mid-Autumn and Golden Week holidays run together

Hong Kong retailers could capture stronger spending from Mainland Chinese visitors during an extended Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday stretch, with Sa Sa singled out as the biggest expected beneficiary in one brokerage's coverage.

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 25 September, followed by the National Day holiday from 1 to 7 October. Because only three working days separate the two, employees who take leave from 28 to 30 September could stitch together a 13-day break — a window that encourages earlier departures and longer-distance trips.

Jefferies expects that longer break to translate into stronger monetisation of Mainland visitors in Hong Kong, with spending conversion among tourists from the Mainland staying elevated. The brokerage also flagged that outbound spending leakage has stabilised and that a stronger yuan is supporting tourists' purchasing power.

Within Jefferies' coverage, Sa Sa is seen as the most likely beneficiary of the holiday boost to Hong Kong retail.

The extended period is also expected to lift dining and travel demand across China, particularly for longer trips. Jefferies cautioned, however, that the size of any uplift will hinge on consumer spending sentiment.

Weak sentiment is expected to keep discretionary spending concentrated around major festive periods, with Chinese New Year remaining the single most important consumption season and Golden Week ranking second.
