Feather Robotics Pitches $30,000 Developer Platform as the 'Android of Robotics'

Feather Robotics was founded last year by Hoa Mai and Parsa Bakhtiari, who are positioning the venture around a $30,000 platform that developers can buy and build on immediately. The pitch rests on the argument that robotics has yet to reach its "ChatGPT moment," when a general-purpose machine can adapt seamlessly to any environment.

Rather than pursuing a full humanoid body and a foundational brain at once, as Tesla and Figure are attempting, Feather supplies the hardware and software toolkit for real-world tasks that developers can tackle now. Co-founder Hoa Mai said a Tesla robot cannot currently be purchased and used as a development base, adding that hardware companies such as Nvidia and Apple began with products that worked and were deployable before layering on complexity.

Mai's route to the company came through an earlier humanoid venture that was sold to 1X. In 2025 he partnered with Bakhtiari, a former Tesla Model 3 engineer who at one point reported directly to Elon Musk, to build what the pair describe as an Android-equivalent for robotics.

Gradient Ventures backed Feather at its inception and led the startup's previously announced $7.6 million pre-seed round, a signal of investor interest in tooling that lets software developers write applications for robots that exist today.

The founders' framing acknowledges deep disagreement across the sector over timing: investors and robotics entrepreneurs differ on whether a general-purpose robot breakthrough is imminent or roughly a decade away. Feather's wager is that a customizable developer platform can serve either timeline.
