Discovered Materials raises $9M to speed up microchip material discovery with AI
The startup has closed a $9 million seed round to deploy AI agents on a high-volume hunt for new materials that could make integrated circuits more efficient and cooler-running.
Discovered Materials, a Y Combinator-backed startup, has raised $9 million in seed funding to accelerate the search for advanced materials used in microchip manufacturing. The round was led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Peak XV Partners and angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar.
The company was founded by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, who combine experience in AI agents and materials science. Ramdas holds a doctorate in materials science from Stanford, while Sridhar previously worked on agent systems at Persona AI and Luma Labs.
The startup targets a pressing problem: chips running AI workloads generate excessive heat, driving up electricity consumption and cooling demands in data centers. Finding new materials for more efficient integrated circuits could help address that challenge.
Discovered Materials has built a software pipeline that uses Anthropic models in a custom harness to propose candidate materials. Those leads are then checked using foundational physics models trained by the company to run simulations and determine whether the materials are worth pursuing.
The approach vastly expands the number of possibilities that can be explored. While a researcher might test around 20 material candidates per day during a PhD, the company says its AI agents can generate and evaluate thousands of ideas daily, running continuously in the cloud under human-directed research directions.
