Cloudflare Acquires Deno to Strengthen Workers Programming Model
Cloudflare has agreed to acquire Deno, the startup behind the JavaScript and TypeScript runtime of the same name, in a move aimed at advancing its Workers developer platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cloudflare announced the acquisition on Friday, saying Deno's technology will feed into efforts to improve Cloudflare Workers, the platform that lets customers build and run software across the company's network. Kenton Varda, principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, set out the rationale for the deal.
Deno was co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl, the creator of Node.js. The startup recently launched celld, an open source implementation of Workers, a release that Varda said delighted the Cloudflare team.
Varda also addressed what he called a popular theory that Cloudflare built Workers to work differently from other cloud platforms in order to create lock-in. He said the company believes that being open source and giving users an escape hatch is good business.
Dahl said his team is joining Cloudflare to make the Workers programming model a mainstream way to build servers.
The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Deno had raised a total of $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia.
