Chinese Teen Yan Ziyi Wins Asian Games Javelin Gold With a Single 70.46m Throw
The 18-year-old from Ningbo took javelin gold at the Nagoya Asian Games with one attempt of 70.46 meters, breaking the previous Games record by more than four meters and leaving Paris Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi nearly eight meters behind.
Yan Ziyi sealed the title in the rain, needing only her opening attempt to win. The 70.46-meter mark wiped out the previous Asian Games record by more than four meters, and the margin allowed her to skip her remaining five throws while managing a minor foot injury. Japanese coverage nicknamed her "Yan One-Throw" for the one-and-done performance.
The gap to the rest of the field was stark. Haruka Kitaguchi, the Paris Olympic champion competing in front of a home crowd, could reach only 62.70 meters and was reduced to tears once the near eight-meter deficit was clear. "This wasn't a competition; it was her solo show," Kitaguchi said afterward.
Reaction in Japan was equally emphatic, with media outlets and social media users describing the Chinese thrower as a "monster-level athlete" operating in a category of her own.
The result is the latest step in a rapid rise for the athlete from Ningbo. Earlier in the season she won all five Diamond League events she entered and set World U20 and Asian records with a 71.74-meter effort in Xiamen, a distance just 54 centimeters short of the world record.
Yan's path into the sport began in elementary school, where she was spotted for throwing softballs farther than her male classmates.
