China’s Homegrown Theme Parks Build on Local Legends and Tang-Era Streets

Homegrown attractions in Henan and Shaanxi are turning to Chinese martial-arts lore and Tang-dynasty city life, using live shows, interactive characters and immersive streetscapes to shape a distinctly local form of entertainment.

At Wansui Mountain Martial Arts City in Kaifeng, Henan province, martial-arts heroes and figures from classic Chinese tales are brought to life through live performance and interactive non-player characters. Visitors come across these characters as they move through the park.

Datang Everbright City in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, takes a different form: a pedestrianised cultural and commercial district modelled on the Tang dynasty (618–907). Entry is free, and the area combines Tang-style architecture with illuminated streets, shopping, food and public performances.

Chang’an Twelve Hours turns a suspenseful historical drama into an indoor themed experience. Its story follows a former imperial guard and a government official trying to stop a terrorist attack within a single day in the city. The attraction uses period-inspired interiors, costumes, food and performances, with a concentrated setting that stresses atmosphere and staged encounters.

Near Zhengzhou, Only Henan · Theatrical Fantasy City places storytelling, rather than rides, at the centre of the visitor experience.
