Carnival Reworks Dining as Cruise Guests Shift to Earlier, Faster Meals
Cruise passengers are changing how they spend their time on board, moving away from late seating and long formal dinners, and Carnival has adjusted its dining formats in response.
Duffy described the behavioral shift among cruise guests since the COVID pandemic as real and measurable. Passengers who once requested the 8 p.m. late seating are now lining up for dinner at 5 p.m., she said.
The traditional 90-minute formal dining experience has lost its appeal with this audience. According to Duffy, "people absolutely do not want" that format anymore.
Carnival responded by creating express dining options that complete a meal in under an hour, along with flexible-time formats that give guests more control over when they eat.
At the center of the change is how travelers choose to use their time while on a cruise. That pattern is one hospitality companies across the industry should be considering, since it reflects guest priorities rather than a single brand's preference.
