Arc browser to shut down December 22 as The Browser Company shifts to Dia

The Browser Company will retire Arc on December 22, 2026, directing users to its AI-first Dia browser. The staged wind-down begins immediately with new account creation halted.

The company said the growing burden of keeping a browser secure, especially as AI raises new challenges, drove the decision. Dia was designed to meet current security standards, and engineering and security teams will concentrate on that product going forward.

New Arc registrations stopped on Thursday, October 22. On November 23, the Arc Search apps for iOS and Android will lose their AI features, including Browse for Me. Users will no longer be able to sign in or sync tabs, though the app will continue to work as a basic local browser.

On December 22, Arc will stop working entirely on Mac and Windows. Accounts will be deactivated, and personal data will be deleted within 30 days. Arc Search will also be removed from the Google Play Store.

The Browser Company says Dia now surpasses Arc in benchmarks for speed, stability and security. Social media reaction was largely negative, with many users asking the company to release Arc as open-source software.

Arc had a devoted following among browser enthusiasts but never became the broad Chrome alternative its makers had envisioned.
