Alibaba Unveils "China's Most Powerful" AI Chip and Teases 10-Trillion-Parameter Model
Alibaba introduced a new AI chip it calls China's most powerful and previewed an AI model with 10 trillion parameters at its annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, alongside plans to expand Alibaba Cloud data-center capacity to 20 gigawatts by 2032.
The chip was presented at Alibaba's annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou as the most powerful AI processor to emerge from China, paired with a first look at an AI model built on a colossal 10 trillion parameters.
CEO Eddie Wu Yongming framed the company's direction around three pillars, describing AI models, AI chips and the AI cloud as the core of the next era of machine intelligence.
Parameters function as an AI model's neural connections, so a 10-trillion-parameter system represents a leap in scale that the company says can handle complex reasoning, generate highly realistic imagery and solve problems at far greater speed.
To support that workload, Alibaba Cloud is scaling its global data-center capacity to 20 gigawatts by 2032 — roughly enough energy to power more than 15 million homes. The company says the buildout is aimed at supporting artificial superintelligence.
